First Winter Running Sauna in Maine
First Winter Running Sauna in Maine
Running a Wood-Fired Sauna in Maine
There are definitely easier ways to start a business in Maine than running a wood-fired sauna through the dead of winter. I’m aware of that now — usually around dawn, shovel in hand, questioning my life choices.
The tractor is still getting sorted for plowing, so most mornings start the old-fashioned way: boots on, shovel scraping frozen ground, coffee doing its best to keep me human. Keeping the outdoor sauna site clear of snow is just part of the deal. Waking up at 5 a.m. and stepping outside into the cold is always a reminder that winter isn’t going anywhere — especially when I look out over the frozen river, all quiet and still except for the crunch of snow underfoot.
But then the fire gets lit.
The stove starts to roar. Steam rises from the wood-fired sauna. And before long, people start rolling in — smiling, half-frozen, and very confident that a Maine sauna was a great idea.
